چکیده
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to compare and analyze the tensile mechanical properties of the ascending aorta (AA) in Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs), for the purpose of providing a biomechanical basis for hypertension prevention. METHODS Pulse wave velocities (PWV) and serum nitric oxide (NO) concentrations were determined in 6-month-old WKY rats and SHRs (n = 21, n = 21, respectively). Then, 20 AAs from each group were obtained for longitudinal tensile testing. RESULTS The maximum stress, maximum strain, and strain at a tensile stress of 16 Kpa were greater in WKY rats than in SHRs (p < 0.05). The aortic elastic modulus and PWV value were greater in SHRs than in WKY rats (p < 0.05 for both), while NO concentrations were lower in the SHR group than in the WKY group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The AA tensile mechanical properties differed between the WKY rats and SHRs, and the tensile mechanical properties of the SHR model had changed. Aortic stiffness and pulse pressure amplification in Wistar-Kyoto and spontaneously hypertensive rats.
In humans, increased body weight and arterial stiffness are significantly associated, independently of blood pressure (BP) level. The finding was never investigated in rodents devoid of metabolic disorders as spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Using simultaneous catheterization of proximal and distal aorta, we measured body weight, intra-arterial BP, heart rate and their variability (spectr...
متن کاملEffects of ofx-Blockade on Arterial Compliance in Normotensive and Hypertensive Rats
The effects of blockade of cq-adrenergic receptors on the mechanical properties of the arterial wall were studied in 10 spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) as compared with 10 matched normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats. Ascending aortic pressure and flow were recorded in open-chest anesthetized rats, and the systemic arterial compliance was calculated. Intravenous injection (1 mg/kg) of Ura...
متن کاملThe ameliorating effects of long-term electroacupuncture on cardiovascular remodeling in spontaneously hypertensive rats
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effects of long-term electroacupuncture at BaiHui (DU20) and ZuSanLi (ST36) on cardiovascular remodeling in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and underlying mechanisms. METHODS 6-weeks-old SHR or Wistar male rats were randomly, divided into 6 groups: the control group (SHR/Wistar), the non-acupoint electroacupuncture s...
متن کاملConnection of smooth muscle cells to elastic lamellae in aorta of spontaneously hypertensive rats.
We have recently demonstrated that in large arteries of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), there is no increase of stiffness despite the increase in wall thickness, a sign of mechanical adaptation of the arterial wall to the higher level of stress. Because the dense plaques of smooth muscle are a major site of anchorage between the muscle cells and extracellular matrix, we determined by ele...
متن کاملMarked disparity in mechanical wall properties between ascending and descending aorta in patients with tetralogy of Fallot.
OBJECTIVES Recent studies have linked abnormal aortic medial pathology to progressive aortic root dilatation in patients with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). To explore whether the aortic medial pathology in TOF is linked to aortic mechanical property, the present study tested the hypothesis that the distribution of impaired aortic elasticity corresponds to the known distribution of abnormal medial ...
